5 Ways To Prevent a Leaking Roof

Leaking roofs are the bane of homeowners around the world. Even a small leak can cause a huge amount of water damage over one night in severe conditions, with the resultant cost of replacing items and drying out your home often high. With winter upon us it’s vital that you take steps to stop your roof from leaking, especially in light of the horrifying recent weather forecasts we’ve experienced. Read on for the five best ways to prevent a leaking roof and ensure your savings go on Christmas presents, not roof repairs.

Trim your trees

Whilst it’s sometimes impossible to stop leaves from clogging your gutter, you can take action to prevent them being filled with twigs by trimming any overhanging branches.

Check the most likely leakage spots

There are many different parts to your roof, and some are much more prone to leaks than others. Chimneys are often repeat offenders for leaks due to their structure, as are roof vents.

Any moss build up on your roof is also extremely likely to cause leakages, so the best thing to do is clear these as soon as possible and check the roofing underneath. As you’d probably expect, any areas with missing tiles or slates are almost guaranteed to leak, so it’s also vital you replace missing roofing as soon as possible.

Assess the age of your roof

Even if all the slates or tiles are in place, your roof may still start to leak simply due to old age. Cracked and worn-out tiles are a common source of unwanted water, so if you’ve bought your house and the old occupier hasn’t re-roofed in years it might be time to replace a few suspect tiles or even the entire roof.

Check your loft

Most homeowners see a leak and immediately assume that the roof is the cause, when in reality problems such as poor ventilation and condensation in the attic can be the offending cause behind a dripping ceiling. Roof void ventilation is the answer here.

Mind your gutter

Another common cause of leaky roofs are blocked gutters. Debris such as leaves can clog gutters and mean that water begins to pool on and back up in to the roof which, inevitably, will begin to leak through. Weather permitting, get your gutters cleaned as soon as it becomes blocked, and remember; your gutters should be sloped in order to drain properly, so if they aren’t then it’s time to adjust or replace.
