DPR have recently undertaken a major new roof installation at a house in First Avenue, Wetherby, near Leeds.
The first part of the project involved erecting scaffolding to the roof elevation and then completely removing the old roof, including the roof covering, ridge tiles, old flashings and the roof lattes. This waste was disposed of in a building skip, hired from a local Wetherby firm.
DPR's roofers then cleaned all the structural roof timbers in order to assess if there were any visible deficiencies to the timber. Fortunately no treatment was required and the new roof installation could begin.
A new high quality BNS747 breathable undertile felt was installed along with new pre-treated timber battens (lattes). These are horizontal timbers required to 'hang' and fix the new roof material to.
Because the Wetherby house was a terrace, a new vertical valley joint was fitted with the adjoining property. This is a purpose made fibre glass valley trough that allows the perfect mating of two different roof coverings between a two or more properties.
The customer chose quality concrete, slate
grey, interlocking 'Marley' roof tiles to be installed, not only due to their aesthetic qualities, but also because they felt they were in keeping with other properties in the Wetherby area.
New Code 4 lead work was fitted to the chimneystack abutments. These are sheet lead flashings that are tailor made on the roof site by our roof technicians to perfectly fit the masonry abutments that they are protecting from water ingress. Flashings are traditionally plugged (fixed) and pointed off with a lead mate compound which is a material sealant that has the same thermal movement as sheet lead and therefore does not split or crack like mortar pointing does in a short period of time.
Finally, new ridge tiles were fitted to the new mortar bedding and point flush to the same. Ridge tiles were colour matched or as near as possible to the new roof finish.
DPR completed the project by removing all resultant rubble and transporting it to a registered waste control site near Wetherby.
